Ulikkal is a small town in Kannur District in Kerala. It is part of Ulikkal Panchayath. The town is surrounded by small villages. The people of this area are very adaptable and amicable, who live in harmony, irrespective of religion or culture.

History

Ulikkal area was under the dominance of Kalyatteshman (Kaliat Yejamana, master of Kalyat, also called Kalliat or Kaliat, the Kaliat Nambiar[disambiguation needed]) and this area witnessed Christian migration (Kudiyettam) in the 1950s mainly from the southern Kerala districts of Kottayam and Ernakulam. In the early-mid twentieth century (around 70 years ago) the St. Thomas church in Manikadavu was built nearly 5 kilometers from Ulikkal. A 1000 families join for mass every Sunday at this church. This village has a number of temples (including the ancient Vayathur or Baithur temple), churches and mosques.

This village is near Vayathur village panchayat area and is famous in Kodagu for the Bythoor or Baithur (Vayathur) temple. Bythoorappa (Vayathoorappan) Vayathur Kaliyar Shiva Kshethra dating back to more than 300 years is one of the very famous temples in the panchayat, situated on the banks of Vayathur river 3 km from the town. This river starts from Kodagu and flows through Parikkalam and Nuchyad villages. This Eshwara (Shiva or Mahadeva) temple is famous in Kodagu (which is nearby) and is a major pilgrimage temple for the Kodavas (natives of Kodagu). The Kodavas and the Malayalis celebrate the annual temple festival together and the management comprises both Kodavas (especially the Puggera family) and Malayalis (especially the Kaliat Nambiar family). Puggera family members were the Deva Thakka (temple manager) of that temple for generations as per tradition. The temple priests of Kodagu were Namboothiri. Kodagu is the district neighbouring Kannur district of which Ulikkal forms a part. [1][2]

The temple Gods of Kodagu are of Kerala origin. Folklore says that the Gods entered Kodagu from Kerala, thousands of years ago, via Vayathur (Bythoor) in Kerala and near the Kodagu border. Formerly Ulikkal formed a part of Vayathur. Interestingly while the Kaliat Nambiar family is Malayali speaking, the Kaliat Kodava family (also called Kaliatanda or Kalyatanda) is Kodava speaking. Kaliat Achappa (also called Kaliatanda Ponnappa or Ajjappa, c.1600) is a famous folk hero in Kodagu. Kaliat Nambiar was one of the largest landlords of Kerala. Both families had maintained links in the past. [3][4][5]
