Puthenvelikkara is a village in the Paravur Taluk Ernakulam district of Kerala, India. Chalakkudy River merges with the Periyar River at Elenthikkara in the village of Puthenvelikkara. The village is situated in the road connecting Paravur with Mala. The nearest town is North Paravur 5 km away which is connected through Puthanvelikkara Station kadavu.
Blessed with scenic splendour, Puthenvelikkara on the banks of rivers Periyar, Chalakudy and Kottapuram Kayal was born out of the influence of natural forces like high tide.
Fossils of sea life, wooden remnants and other debris that came up during digging the town’s earth support the theory of its origin. Similar land formed due to high tides can be found at various places in the small state of Kerala. The etymology of some of the place names is quite interesting.
1 - Thuruthipuram: The place beyond Thuruthoor
2 - Thuruthoor: The land of small islands
3 – Panjipalla: The land of cotton (Panji)
4 - Manancherykunnu: The hill (Kunnu) that reaches towards the sky.
5 - Karottukara: The land adjacent to the bank.
6 - Vattekattukunnu: The hill surrounded by a forest.
7 - Kodikuthiyakunnu : The land on which Tipu Sulthan set his Flag.
8 - Cherukadappuram: The bank of Cheru Kadappuram was like a beach previously.
9 - Chowkkakadavu: The check post (Chowkka) set up by the Travancore rulers to collect the taxes.
10 - Malavana: The land which looks like a chain, and the Malavana Rock (Para) situated in the middle of the river appears like a pendant.
