The Poorva Express (Bengali: পূর্ব এক্সপ্রেস, Hindi: पूर्व एक्स्प्रेस) is a daily superfast express train of Indian Railways, running between Howrah, West Bengal, and New Delhi, the capital city of India.

The name Poorva signifies the eastern part of India. It is a very good train after Rajdhani for travellers of Bihar, Jharkhand & West Bengal.

The Train has been allotted a 22 coach rake of LHB Coaches, which started running from 30 April 2013 on allotment basis The Allotment of LHB Rake for first 1 month is like this. Now the maximum permissible speed of this train is 130.00 km/h.

12303/04 Poorva Express is hauled by a single WAP-4/WAP 7 electric locomotive of Howrah shed in its entire plight on Howrah-Delhi main line section (via Patna).
12381/82 Poorva Express is hauled from Howrah to Mughalsarai (via Grand Chord) by a WAP-4/WAP 7 locomotive, Mughalsarai to Allahabad via Varanasi by a WDM 3A locomotive & then Allahabad to New Delhi by a WAP 7 locomotive.

Trivia

The train underwent change in its livery from creamy brown to official blue in the early 2000s. Earlier it used to carry a full First AC coach as well. When this train was introduced this train used to receive the highest priority during its run. After Rajdhani Express was introduced it does not receives much priority then when the train was first introduced.

Accidents and Incidents

On 14 December 2014 the 12381 UP Howrah - New Delhi Poorva Express derailed at 8.27 am after leaving Howrah at 8.15 am.^[5] 11 sleeper coaches and a pantry car (AC Hot Buffer Car) of the New Delhi-bound Poorva Express derailed at Liluah shortly after leaving Howrah station. There was no casualty or injury to any passenger, railway officials said. The train was moving at a slow speed when it derailed, the officials said, adding that the reasons for the mishap was being examined. What saved the passengers was the speed of the train. "The Poorva Express was moving at 10 to 15kmph when the accident occurred. The average speed of the train is 63kmph, though it can travel at 130kmph. Derailment at higher speeds would have been catastrophic," an official said.
