History
Polemology (literally "science of war", derives from Ancient Greek: πόλεμος and logos, "study") is a branch of international relations theory that focuses on the understanding of conflicts, their origin and their functioning. The technical term, which makes it a distinct discipline from irenology (whereas Anglo countries tends to merge peace and conflict studies), comes from the sociologist Gaston Bouthoul (1896–1980) who used the term after the World War II to propose a new field of investigation.[1]
In 1943, King's College London reestablished its military science department as the Department of War Studies. The department was discontinued in 1948, and the field of war studies was taught in the Department of Medieval and Modern History until the Department of War Studies was reinstated in 1962.[2]
