Viren Wilfred Rasquinha (born 13 September 1980) was the former captain of India's national field hockey team. He studied at the St. Stanislaus High School,[1] and was a member of the Indian team that finished seventh at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. He quit international hockey to pursue management studies at the age of 28. After completion of his MBA, he joined Olympic Gold Quest and is the CEO.
Career
Rasquinha made his international senior debut as a midfielder in May 2002, at a Four Nation Tournament in Adelaide. Viren Rasquinha even went on to lead India in some matches in the bilateral series against Pakistan in the absence of an injured Dilip Tirkey. He was also captain of Premier Hockey League team Maratha Warriors. Viren announced his retirement from hockey on 15 January 2008 to pursue management studies at Indian School of Business, Hyderabad. On his retirement from international hockey at a young of 28, he said, "Retirement is a very personal thing,” he says. “For me, it was difficult but I always wanted to retire at the peak of my game. People ask me till today why I retired early and remember me fondly, with respect. That is all I can ask for."[2]
