Taylor Township, Michigan

Taylor Township was a former civil township of Wayne County in the U.S. state of Michigan.

In 1968 Taylor Township incorporated as the City of Taylor.

History

Taylor Township was named in honor of Zachary Taylor, a national military hero in the 1840s, who would go on to be elected the twelfth President of the United States in 1849.

The township was formed from 24 square miles (62 km²) that were originally a part of Ecorse Township. However, that township was too large for area residents to easily participate in civic affairs of the township and the residents petitioned to form a separate township. The township was organized on March 16, 1847 and the first township meeting was held April 5, 1847, at the home of Richard Sutliff. There were 44 in attendance at the important gathering, at which time they elected their township officers.

The first registered property owner was Peter Coan, who purchased an 80 acre (320,000 m²) parcel from the United States government in 1830.
