Internal selection
On 19 June 2013, SMtv San Marino announced that it had contracted Valentina Monetta to represent San Marino for a third consecutive year.[1] Valentina Monetta previously represented San Marino at the 2012 Contest with the song "The Social Network Song" and at the 2013 Contest with the song "Crisalide (Vola)", failing to qualify from the semi-finals on both occasions. Monetta was invited to participate for the third time by the Director General of SMtv San Marino, Carlo Romeo, who was disappointed by the nation's failure to qualify to the final in the Eurovision Song Contest 2013.
The Sammarinese entry, "Maybe", was presented during a special presentation program on 14 March 2014.[2][3] Monetta opted to perform the English version of the song at the Eurovision Song Contest 2014. However, an Italian version titled "Forse" was also recorded. Both versions of the song were composed by Ralph Siegel with lyrics by Mauro Balestri. Siegal and Balestri began composing several songs in July 2013 for which Monetta recorded demos in Forte dei Marmi and at Siegel's studio in Munich. The remaining songs that were under consideration were released as part of Monetta's studio album Sensibilità (Sensibility).[4]

During the semi-final allocation draw on 20 January 2014 at the Copenhagen City Hall, San Marino was drawn to compete in the second half of the first semi-final on 6 May 2014.[5] In the first semi-final, the producers of the show decided that San Marino would perform 12th, following Moldova and preceding Portugal.[6] San Marino qualified from the first semi-final, placing 10th and scoring 40 points, and competed in the final on 10 May 2014.[7] During the winner's press conference for the first semi-final qualifiers, San Marino was allocated to compete in the second half of the final.[8] Their qualification marked the first time San Marino qualified to the final since their debut in the contest in 2008 with Valentina Monetta advancing for the first time in her three consecutive appearances. In the final, the producers of the show decided that San Marino would perform 25th, following the Netherlands and preceding United Kingdom.[9] San Marino placed 24th in the final, scoring 14 points.[10]
On stage, Valentina Monetta was joined by four backing vocalists and a pianist. The performance featured Monetta standing in a white dress on a glittery gold circular platform with bluish a fan-like cloth arrangement behind her.[11]
In San Marino, both the semi-finals and the final were broadcast on SMtv San Marino and Radio San Marino with commentary by Lia Fiorio and Gigi Restivo.[12] An alternative broadcast of the semi-finals and the final were also broadcast online on the SMtv San Marino website with English commentary by John Kennedy O'Connor and Jamarie Milkovic.[13] The Sammarinese spokesperson revealing the result of the Sammarinese vote in the final was San Marino's previous representative in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2013 Michele Perniola.[14]
