Ruptly is a video news agency financed by the Russian government,[1] specializing in video on demand belonging to the Russian based RT televised news network based in Berlin, Germany.

History

Officially launched on April 4, 2013,[2] Ruptly consists of an international team headquartered in Germany and stringers in Washington, Damascus, London, Madrid, Gaza and Cairo among its 22 bureaus.[2] They broadcast live (with a platform that enables simultaneous streaming of five events) and allow TV stations and online media to receive and broadcast in real time.[3] They also have a video on demand service.[4] The service also sells footage to others on their website.

A Ruptly satellite reporting set up

Ruptly coverage includes much of what is covered on RT including politics, finance, sports, science, technology, entertainment and light news. The agency has constantly reported on Russia, European policies, the NSA surveillance, the German elections of 2013, Middle East and the Syrian conflict.

The live events that Ruptly broadcast include elections, protests all over the world,[5] international talks such as P5+1, trials and walks in the space. According to Margarita Simonyan, editor-in-chief of RT, the aim of the agency is "to become the go-to alternative resource in a highly concentrated market of professional news video footage, and to deliver coverage of stories that other agencies miss."[6]
