The Rex Kingsley Footballer of the Year was an annual award given to the Scottish player who was adjudged to have been the best of the year in Scottish football. As there were no player of the year awards organized by football writers or players union until the SWFA awards got underway in 1965, the Rex Kingsley award was generally considered the most prestigious of its type at the time. The award was handed out by Rex Kingsley of the Sunday Mail newspaper. Unusually, the award was given out for a player's performance over a calendar year. It was presented either at the end of that year or early into the next one.
