The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a professional league for Twenty20 cricket championship in India. It was initiated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), headquartered in Mumbai, and is supervised by BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla, who serves as the league's Chairman and Commissioner. It is currently contested by nine teams, consisting of players from around the world. It was started after an altercation between the BCCI and the Indian Cricket League.
In 2010, the IPL became the first sporting event ever to be broadcast live on YouTube in association with Indiatimes. Its brand value is estimated to be around US$2.92 billion in fourth season. However, the league has been engulfed by series of corruption scandals where allegations of cricket betting, money laundering and spot fixing were witnessed.

The team is one of the eight founding members of the IPL in 2008. Mumbai Indians are currently led by Harbhajan Singh and coached by Robin Singh. They are one of the main teams in the city, together with clubs like the Mumbai cricket team and football club Mumbai FC. The team is owned by India's biggest conglomerate, Reliance Industries, through its 100% subsidiary IndiaWin Sports. Mumbai Indians is ranked No.2 in the IPL with a brand value of $57.13 million in season four of IPL after Chennai Super Kings (who are the no. 1 with brand value of $70 million).

He is a right-handed batsman and occasional off spin bowler who plays for England, Surrey and played for Delhi Daredevils from 2012 to 2014.In IPL auction 2015 he was picked by Sunrisers Hyderabad He was captain of the England Test and One Day International teams from 4 August 2008 to 7 January 2009 but resigned after just three Tests and nine One Day Internationals, following a dispute with England coach Peter Moores, who was sacked the same day. On 31 May 2012, Pietersen retired from all forms of international limited-overs cricket.

As of 2012, fifty six cricketers have played for the franchise cricket team Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), which is one of the teams participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL). KXIP have reached the IPL playoffs once. Adam Gilchrist (pictured) is the current captain of the team. Piyush Chawla has played the most matches: 71 since his debut for the franchise in 2008. Shaun Marsh is also the leading run-scorer for DD, scoring 1,603 runs. Marsh, Mahela Jayawardene, Adam Gilchrist, Paul Valthaty has scored one century for KXIP each. Marsh has the team's best batting average: 45.80. Among the bowlers, Chawla has taken more wickets than any other, claiming 73. The best bowling average is Dimitri Mascarenhas's 15.00. Kumar Sangakkara has taken the most catches as wicket-keeper and has made the highest number of stumpings for KXIP. Chawla has claimed the highest number of catches among fielders, taking 21.
