Like all Plasmodium species P. cercopitheci has both vertebrate and insect hosts. The vertebrate hosts for this parasite are mammals.

The parasite was first described by Thieler in 1930.
Geographical occurrence

Clinical features and host pathology
The only known host for this species is the monkey Cercopithecis nictitans.
