Matriarch is the fifth studio album by Veil of Maya. It is the band's first album with vocalist Lukas Magyar.[5] The album was produced, mixed and mastered by Taylor Larson of From First to Last.
Background
The single "Phoenix" was released on January 1, 2015. Prior to the song's release, the band posted updates on their social media accounts with the hashtag "VeilHasRisen". A music video for the song "Mikasa" was released on March 23, as well as revealing the album's name and release date.[6] The album became available for streaming on May 11.[7]
Musical style
Matriarch is the first album by Veil of Maya to use clean vocals,[8] which has caused some controversy among fans.[9]
Additionally, all of the track titles for Matriarch are named after popular female characters from various media, from "Nyu" being named after the primary protagonist of the anime series Elfen Lied to "Daenerys" being named after Daenerys Targaryen from the A Song of Ice and Fire series. "Aeris" is a character from Final Fantasy VII. "Mikasa" is named after the female protagonist of the anime Attack on Titan.
