Marek Kaljumäe (born 18 February 1991) is a professional footballer who plays as a defender for FC Levadia Tallinn in the Meistriliiga and for the Estonia under-21s.
Life and career
Marek came through the youth system at Estonian III Liiga club S.C. Real in his home city of Tallinn. In August 2009, he signed for Dutch Eredivisie side AZ Alkmaar. He spent the 2009–10 season playing for the AZ under-19 side. In 2010–11 he moved on loan to SC Telstar, making his debut in September 2010 in a 3–0 league win over Den Bosch.[1][2][3]
With Telstar he participated in an unusual corner kick routine, in which he and teammate Selmo Kurbegovic took turns repeatedly placing the ball by hand within the corner arc in an attempt to confuse the opposition.[4]
On 1 July 2011, following the expiry of his contract with AZ Alkmaar, he signed a two-year deal with Estonian top tier club FC Levadia Tallinn.[5]
Marek has represented his country at under-17, under-18, under-19 and under-21 levels.[6][7] He played his first competitive game for the Estonia under-21s in a 5–0 loss to the Republic of Ireland under-21s in an August 2010 qualifying match for the 2011 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship.[8] He scored his first goal at under-21 level in a 3–1 August 2011 defeat to Azerbaijan under-21s.[9]
