- Beginning in the 1920s, the National Shrine of St. Therese was housed at St. Clara’s Carmelite Church in the south side of Chicago (destroyed by fire in 1975, relocated at Darien, Illinois).[6]

Soon after, plans were drawn for the original church and school. Archbishop John T. McNicholas granted permission to start construction in July 1928. The church and school were completed in March 1929.
