Justin O'Neill (born 4 April 1991) is an Australian professional rugby league footballer who currently plays for the North Queensland Cowboys in the National Rugby League. He plays as a centre, winger and fullback. O'Neill is a two-time premiership winner, with the Storm in 2012 and the Cowboys in 2015.

Background

Born in Warwick, Queensland, O'Neill attended The Cathedral School in Townsville, Queensland and played his junior football for the Hughenden Hawks and Townsville Brothers, before being signed by the Melbourne Storm. In September 2007, O'Neill re-signed with the Melbourne Storm on a 2-year contract.[2] In November 2008, O'Neill played for the Australian Institute of Sport rugby league team that toured France and the United Kingdom.[3] In 2008, O'Neill was a part of the Storm's NYC squad[4] and played for them in 2009[5] and 2010.[6] In 2009, he was selected for the Queensland under-18 team.

On 4 October 2009, O'Neill scored a try in the Storm's 2009 NYC Grand Final win over the Wests Tigers.[7][8]

Playing career

2010

In Round 14 of the 2010 NRL season, O'Neill made his NRL debut for the Storm against the Sydney Roosters.[9] In October 2010, O'Neill played for the Junior Kangaroos.[10]

2011

In 2011, O'Neill was limited to just 12 NRL games for the Storm, scoring 5 tries, after suffering a shoulder injury early in the season.

2012

On 7 May 2012, O'Neill re-signed with the Storm on a 2-year contract.[11] On 30 September 2012, O'Neill scored a try in the Storm's 2012 NRL Grand Final win over the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs.[12] In October 2012, O'Neill played for Vanuatu against Greece.[13][14]

2013

In February 2013, O'Neill played for the NRL All Stars in the 2013 All Stars match.[15] On 22 February 2013, O'Neill played in the Storm's 2013 World Club Challenge win over the Leeds Rhinos.[16]

On 14 June 2013, O'Neill re-signed with the Storm on a 3-year contract.[17]

2014

In January 2014, O'Neill was selected in the QAS Emerging State of Origin squad for the fourth year in a row.

On 20 December 2014, after being released from his Storm contract, O'Neill signed with the North Queensland Cowboys on a 2-year contract starting in 2015 to return to the area he grew up in.[18]

2015

O'Neill made his debut for the Cowboys in Round 1 of the 2015 NRL season against the Sydney Roosters, scoring a try.

On 4 October 2015, O'Neill was a member of the Cowboys' Grand Final winning side, starting at centre in the side's 17-16 victory over the Brisbane Broncos. O'Neill scored the Cowboys' first try of the game, his second Grand Final try in his second Grand Final victory.

Personal life

O'Neill is of Ni-Vanuatu descent through his mother.[20] O'Neill's younger brother, Samsen, played for the Cowboys' NYC side and currently plays for the Townsville Blackhawks.
