Jiaozi (currency)

Jiaozi (Chinese: 交子; pinyin: jiāozǐ) was a form of banknote which appeared around 10th century in the Sichuan capital of Chengdu, China. Most[weasel words] numismatists regard it as the first paper money in history, a development of the Chinese Song Dynasty (960 - 1279 AD).
To combat counterfeiting, jiaozi were stamped with multiple Banknote seals.

Truth
Even the historists thought Jiaozi supposed to be the world's earliest banknote, but Tu Yanzhi, the chief of Southern Song Dynasty Currency Museum and the specialist on acient currency research said it wasn't true. He described that Jiaozi is more like a cheque, the real banknote would be the huizi.[1]
