INS Sahyadri (F49) is a Shivalik class stealth multi-role frigate built for the Indian Navy. This class features improved stealth and land attack capabilities over the preceding Talwar-class frigates.[4]
Construction
INS Sahyadri was built at the Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) located in Mumbai. The keel of the vessel was laid on 30 September 2003 and was launched on 27 May 2005. She underwent sea trials in 2011-2012 from thereon was commissioned on 21 July 2012 into the Eastern Naval Command headquartered at Visakhapatnam.[4]
Service History
Captain Sanjay Vatsayan was the first commanding officer of the ship.[5]
2013
In October 2013, INS Sahyadri participated in the International Fleet Review 2013 in Sydney, Australia, as part of a growing defense cooperation between the two countries.[6]
2014
She made her second visit to Australia in June 2014 with a port call at Darwin on a three-day goodwill visit. At a party with the Australian Navy, Darwin's Indian Diaspora, the Indian High Commissioner to Australia and senior leaders were the guests. She sailed onward to Hawaii to participate in the naval Exercise RIMPAC (2 July - 2 August 2014) with the US Navy and 20 other navies.[7][8][9] On August 2014, she visited Manila, Philippines on her way back from RIMPAC 2014. The ship was commanded by Captain Jyotin Raina.[10]
2015
As part of India’s Look East and Act East Policy, INS Sahyadri was deployed to South China sea and the North West Pacific region On 2-5 October 2015, the ship visited Da Nang, Vietnam.[11] On 15 October 2015, the ship entered Sagami Bay, Japan and participated in International Fleet Review organized by the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF).[12] On 23-27 October, the ship visited Incheon, South Korea.[13] On 1-4 November she visited Manila, Philippines.[14] The ship was commanded by Captain Kunal Singh Rajkumar.[15]
On 7-12 December 2015, INS Sahyadri participated in bilateral maritime exercise, Indra 2015, with the Russian Navy in the Bay of Bengal. The Indian Navy was represented by INS Sahyadri, INS Ranvijay, INS Shakti, INS Sindhuvir, P8I long-range maritime patrol aircraft, Dornier short-range maritime patrol aircraft and other integral rotary wing helicopters during the maritime exercise.[16]
2016
In May 2016, INS Sahyadri was awarded the ‘Best Ship Trophy’ at the annual Fleet Awards function in Vishakapatnam.[17]
On 18 May 2016 INS Sahyadri with INS Satpura, INS Shakti and INS Kirch left for a two month deployment in the South China Sea and North Western Pacific. They will participate in the Malabar 2016 exercise and
make port calls at Cam Rahn Bay (Vietnam), Subic Bay (Philippines), Sasebo (Japan), Busan (South Korea), Vladivostok (Russia) and Port Klang (Malaysia).[18] The ship is commanded by Captain K S Rajkumar.[19]
On 30 May - 2 June 2016, INS Sahyadri and INS Shakti made a port call at Subic Bay, Philippines. The ship was commanded by Captain K S Rajkumar.[20][21]
