Housing at Virginia Commonwealth University

Housing at Virginia Commonwealth University is managed by the VCU Department of Residential Life & Housing. Housing provided by the University houses 5,820 residents.[1] There are two housing campuses at VCU, and thirteen residential halls. VCU also recently finished construction of one new residence hall (West Grace North).[2][3]

Some halls are available only to freshman, while others are available only to upperclass students. Seventy-nine percent of first-year students live on campus.[4] Rhoads Hall, Johnson Hall, Brandt Hall, the GRC halls, and Cabaniss Hall are the primary freshman communities on campus. Together they house approximately 3,273 students.[5]

Monroe Park Campus

Johnson Hall

Johnson Hall is the oldest residence hall at Virginia Commonwealth University. Built in 1915, it was originally a high priced apartment building. Each of its upper floors contained four large apartments. VCU bought Johnson Hall in the 1950s and renovated the building into a residence hall while the school was still called Richmond Professional Institute. The only visible evidence of the original interior are the large round pillars in the main lobby.

Today, Johnson Hall has 12 floors and houses 527 people. On the first floor there is a comfortable TV lounge that was renovated in the Summer of 2006. The renovation included the addition of multicolored walls and carpet, rolling easy chairs, the incorporation of an LCD Flat panel TV, cable set-up, and lastly the addition of a white dry-erase board.

The first floor also features a mail room with upperclassmen workers inside, a computer lab with several workstations, a printer that is dedicated for free student use. There are also several snack machines, offices, and additional rooms in the sub corridor.

Above the first level are 11 residential floors.

There are also quite a few cosmetic differences about Johnson Hall. Because it was an apartment building at one point in time, it still features the ornate decorations in some areas on the ceiling.[citation needed]

Brandt Hall

GRC I

  • Structure: 4-story
  • Restriction: Freshmen (limited space for upperclassmen and transfer students)
  • Capacity: 482

9-month lease, based on academic calendar. Style: 2- to 6-person apartments

GRC II and III

  • Structure: 4-story
  • Restriction: Freshman
  • Capacity: 348 & 172

9-month lease, based on academic calendar. Style: 4-person suites

Ackell

  • Structure: 4-story
  • Restriction: Upperclassmen
  • Capacity: 394

Ackell hall is a four-story structure limited to upperclassmen. It houses 394 students in 2-4 person apartments.

Broad and Belvidere

  • Structure: 4-story
  • Restriction: Upperclassmen
  • Capacity: 480

Limited to upperclassmen, it is a four-story structure and has 2-4 person apartments.

Cary and Belvidere

  • Structure: 5-story
  • Restriction: Upperclassmen
  • Capacity: 413

Style: 2-4 people per apartment in singles

West Grace

  • Structure: 7-story
  • Restriction: Honors College
  • Capacity: 177

9-month lease, based on academic calendar. This dorm houses students enrolled in the Honors College. The dorm has single rooms, each with a private bath and corridor-style halls

West Grace South

  • Structure: 5-story
  • Restriction: Upperclassmen
  • Capacity: 459

West Grace North

  • Structure: 5-story
  • Restriction: Upperclassmen
  • Capacity: 388

The residence hall includes a "living/learning" space for international education.[6]

MCV Campus

Cabaniss Hall

  • Structure: 10-story
  • Restriction: Freshman
  • Capacity: 423

Cabaniss Hall, located near downtown Richmond on the MCV campus, is a 10 story high rise building with primary freshman students and limited upperclassmen. It also houses many transfer students. Most students in Cabaniss hall take a majority of their classes on the Monroe Park campus, and either drive or take a GRTC bus or VCU Campus Connector across the city to classes and other activities. It houses 423 residents in corridor style halls.[7]

Low-rises

The MCV campus low-rises consist of four halls, each with different student capacities and restrictions:

  • Rudd Hall, capacity of 46, restricted to female graduate students from both campuses and MCV health care students
  • McRae Hall, capacity of 45, restricted to male graduate students from both campuses and MCV health care students
  • Bear Hall, capacity of 30, restricted to coeducational by floor; graduate students from both campuses and MCV health care students
  • Warner Hall, capacity of 38, restricted to coeducational by floor; graduate students from both campuses and MCV health care students

Future Dorm locations

Proposed Master Site Plan includes an additional 1300 beds that would put the total amount of dorms to 6, 947.[8]

  • Central Fidelity Bank - 250 students
  • 500 N. Harrison - 400 students
  • Marshall/Harrison (addition to Ackell) - 180 students
  • Cary/Adams (near Brand Center) - 200 students
  • Grace/Shafer High Rise - 650 students
  • Grad/Professional at Cabaniss - 200 students - The Current Cabaniss for 1st year students would be turned into Grad housing and the current low rise on Cabaniss would be converted.

Off Campus

Many upperclassmen live in apartments in the surrounding neighborhoods to VCU. The neighborhoods include the Fan district, Carver, Oregon Hill, Monroe Ward, Jackson Ward, Shockoe Bottom and Church Hill

Private Student Housing Complexes

To meet the demands of student housing, numerous private apartment complexes have been built on or next to campus.

  • 8 1/2 Canal Street - 540 students[9][10]
  • 1200 West Marshall - 406 students[11][12]
  • The Collegiate - 690 students[13][14]
  • Pine Court Apartments[15]
  • Shafer-Grace High-rise - 156 Units (August 2014)[16][17]
