Gharana Mogudu is a 1992 Telugu melodrama-action comedy film which starred Chiranjeevi and Nagma in the lead roles. The film directed by K. Raghavendra Rao, became the first Telugu film to gross over 100 million rupees at the box office.[1] Though Bollywood was not oblivious to the fact that Telugu films can generate revenue which can match up to or even surpass the collections of Hindi films, the massive collections of Gharana Mogudu literally left Bollywood stunned. This film was premiered at the 1993 International Film Festival of India. The film is a remaked inTamil film Mannan, which is again remaked in Kannada filim Anuraga Aralithu starring Rajkumar[2]

Synopsis

Raju (Chiranjeevi) is a do-gooder who helps his co-workers in a Visakhapatnam shipyard, but when his mother suffers a paralytic stroke, he moves back to Hyderabad and looks for a job. Uma Devi (Nagma) daughter of industrialist Bapineedu (Raogopal Rao) takes over the business from her father and helps it to reach new heights which also sees her head-strong ways reach new heights. In this scenario, she not only rejects Ranganayakulu's (Kaikala Satyanarayana) son's marriage proposal but insults them when the father-son duo show up at her house. To get their revenge, they send goons to kill Uma Devi. As fate would have it, Bapineedu shows up in the car instead of Uma Devi and is rescued by Raju who asks him for a job which Bapineedu readily agrees to.

Raju wins over the employees in no time and takes on the high-handedness of Uma Devi and her management. This leads to constant conflict and Uma Devi decides to marry Raju so that he will not interfere anymore. To this end she emotionally blackmails Raju's mother and eventually makes Raju agree to marry her. But Raju continues to trouble her even after marriage. Uma Devi's secretary, Bhavani (Vani Viswanath), is also a friend of Raju which leads to jealousy. In the meantime, Ranganayakulu, with the help of Uma Devi's manager Sarangapani (Ahuti Prasad) schemes against Uma Devi to sabotage her factory. The rest of film deals with how Raju thwarts the schemes of Ranganayakulu and teaches Uma Devi to be humble.

The music and the background score of the movie was composed by M. M. Keeravani, the lyrics for the songs were written by Bhuvanachandra and M. M. Keeravani.[3]

Box-office

  • Gharana Mogudu collected a distributors' share of Rs.13.5 million in its opening week.[4]
  • The film was a blockbuster with a 100-day run in 106 centres[5] and a 575-day run in three centres[6] including a 183-day run in Sandhya 70mm, Hyderabad.[7]
  • Gharana Mogudu collected a share of Rs.60 million in 50 days and became the first Telugu movie to collect a distributors' share of Rs.120 million.
  • In Bangalore, the scene was no different. All the shows right from the day of its release were house full continuously for 105 days at Santosh-A/C DTS theatre.
  • Gharana Mogudu had a majestic 183 days run at Sandhya 70MM, Hyderabad, collecting a gross of Rs. 45,75,358.
  • It was dubbed into Malayalam as Hey Hero. It was a very huge hit in Kerala too. The movie ran for more than 100 days in many centers.

Trivia

  • Chiranjeevi's popularity which was climbing the ladder steadily till Rowdy Alludu, suddenly rose up to unimaginable heights. He then became the highest paid actor in India. The film made Chiranjeevi the highest paid actor in India, catapulting him to hit the cover pages of all national weekly magazines and India Today had a caption, 'Bigger Than Bachchan'
  • K. Raghavendra Rao teamed up with Keeravani for the first time for this movie. After this movie, the team worked for many other movies giving massive industry hits and musical chart busters like Allari Priyudu, Allari Premikudu, Annamayya, Gharana Bullodu, Sri Ramadasu and many more.
  • Keeravani was just getting noticed at that time with Kshana Kshanam and Seetharamaiah Gari Manavaralu. Gharana Mogudu sky rocketed him to fame. All the songs were chartbusters.
  • The song Bangaru kodi petta was a nationwide hit. The song was popularly played in orchestras during marriages or festivals even in other states. It's Malayalam version 'Punnaru peda mane..' was also a very big hit at that time. It was a rage among the music lovers in Kerala.
  • The song was remixed and used in the blockbuster film Magadheera.
  • Nagma was very apprehensive about the climax sequence, where she had to be rescued by Chiranjeevi from a fire accident. Chiranjeevi insisted that he would do the stunts by himself and was also keen that Nagma did the stunt sequences herself. Though she advised Chiranjeevi not to take such a risk and use a dupe instead, Chiranjeevi was adamant on doing the stunts on his own and finally was able to convince Nagma to do the stunt sequence herself. The scene came out really well in the movie and was widely appreciated by the public.
  • Keeravani used a dummy lyric for the song Bangaru Kodi Petta while he played the tune for the first time before K. Raghavendra Rao and Chiranjeevi. The lyrics start with 'smuggled goods bandi vochenandi'. Later on the lyrics were changed to 'Bangaru Kodi Petta' based on the situation of the song.
  • The movie also had a good run in Chennai though the people there had already watched Mannan, which was also a remake of Anuraga Aralithu.
