Funeka Soldaat is a lesbian community activist from South Africa. She is a survivor of corrective rape and founded the Khayelitsha-based lesbian advocacy group Free Gender.[1][2] Free Gender with Soldaat at the forfront fights for the black lesbian communitys right to exist and to voice their right to existance.[3]

Soldaat spoke to a Khayelitsha commission of inquiry in January 2014 about the 1995 rape. She said that the ill treatment she received at two police stations after the attack was devastating.[4]

Free Gender is a voice that calls out on homofobic and racist symptoms of society and called for a boycott of the 2014 Cape Town Pride event, alleging racism, with Soldaat claiming that the event excludes women and nonwhites and instead targeting money strong white gay guys (Event director Matthew van As disputed her claim.)[5]

Soldaat has been the subject of two short films, Ndim, Ndim (It's Me, It's Me), directed by Martha Qumbe in 2005,[6] and Episode 2 of the SABC-commissioned series I Am Woman: Leap of Faith in 2013.[2]
