Franchesca Ramsey (born November 29, 1983), also known as Chescaleigh,[1][2] is an American comedian, activist, television and YouTube personality,[3] and actress, who has been featured on MTV,[4] MSNBC[5] and the BBC.

Career

YouTube

Ramsey's videos are often comedic, using a combination of sarcasm, sketches, parodies and music. Some of her videos address and critique issues like student loan debt, racism and sexism whereas others play upon social media trends. Her popularity skyrocketed after her video "Sh*t White Girls Say...to Black Girls" went viral on YouTube in January 2012.[6]

Along with maintaining her main YouTube channel, Ramsey also has another channel, Chescalocs, where she uploads hair tutorial videos, and a channel where she elusively vlogs, chescavlogs.

Ramsey has collaborated with other YouTube personalities and channels such as Kat Blaque, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Barely Productions. In 2015, Blaque illustrated Ramsey's story "Sometimes You're a Caterpillar" which uses a snail and a caterpillar to break down the concept of privilege. The video has since been featured on a variety of sites such as Everyday Feminism, Upworthy, Mic, and MTV.[7]

Also in 2015, Ramsey became the host of the MTV web series Decoded where she helps to explain racism and micro-aggression in a clear and comedic way.[8][9]

Television

In early 2016, Ramsey joined Comedy Central's The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore as a contributor and writer.[10]

Ramsey has also appeared in television series such as Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell and Broad City.

Other Ventures

Ramsey hosts a podcast with her husband Patrick called "Last Name Basis" where the couple talk about their lives and the world around them.[11]

Controversy

She has been the subject of controversy surrounding her views of racism. Although much of her focus is on racism she has been accused of being racist and denies these allegations on the basis that she is black. Ramsey believes that as an African American she is incapable of racism.[12]

Critical Response

Several of Ramsey's videos have been featured on MTV,[13] Huffington Post,[14] CollegeHumor,[15] Jezebel,[16] and Glamour Magazine.[17] These videos include her song parodies "Don't Tweet", "Student Loan Countdown", and "Turn Your Phone" as well as some of her more personal videos like "My Lipstick Story".[18]
