Farm to Market Road 526, or FM 526 or Urban Road 526 (UR 526), is a state highway entirely inside the city of Houston, Texas. Locally, the road is now known as Maxey Road. The road runs from I-10 north to US 90 Business.

The road was established in 1941 as a spur from U.S. Highway 90, then the main route east from Houston, to the Market Street Road. In 1961, the road was shortened to State Highway 73, which later became Interstate 10. In 1995, the state of Texas re-designated the road as Urban Road 526, but like FM 525 to the northwest, people rarely refer to the road as a state highway.

Route description

FM 526 begins at an interchange with I-10 in Houston, Harris County, heading northwest on Federal Road, a six-lane divided highway. The road passes businesses, becoming a five-lane road with a center left-turn lane and curving north to become Maxey Road. The highway through a mix of residential and commercial areas along with some woods. FM 526 reaches an interchange with the US 90 freeway, where it merges into the frontage roads of that highway. The highway continues to run northeast along the US 90 frontage roads, carrying two lanes in each direction and heading through wooded areas with some homes. FM 526 splits from US 90 by heading north on South Lake Houston Parkway, a five-lane road with a center left-turn lane, passing through residential areas before passing fields. FM 526 turns northwest and heads through commercial areas, ending at US 90 Business.[1][2][3]

History

FM 526 was first designated in 1941, running from Market Street Road north to US 90 (now US 90 Business). In 1952, the southern portion of FM 526 was relocated to Federal Road, ending at SH 73. The southern terminus was cut back to a new alignment of SH 73 (now I-10) in 1961. FM 526 officially became UR 526 in 1995.[1]
