Donald Mayer Blinken[2] (11 November 1925 – 22 September 2022) was an American businessman and diplomat.[3][4] He served as the United States Ambassador to Hungary from 1994 to 1997. His son, Antony Blinken, is Secretary of State of the United States in the presidency of Joe Biden.

Early life

Blinken was born on November 11, 1925, in New York City, the son of Maurice Blinken and his wife, Ethel Horowitz.[5][6][7] His father and mother were of Jewish heritage and his father was originally from Kyiv (now the capital of Ukraine). His grandfather was author Meir Blinken. Blinken had two brothers, Alan and Robert. [8] The brothers grew up both in New York City and Yonkers, New York. They attended the Horace Mann School.[8]

Blinken graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor's degree in economics from Harvard University in 1948,[9][10] after serving in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II in 1944.[3]

Career

Blinken met Mark Rothko in 1956. He was president of the Mark Rothko Foundation from 1976 to 1989.[11][12][13]

Blinken was a director and one of the founders of E. M. Warburg Pincus & Company, an investment bank in New York. He served as the board chairman of the State University of New York from 1978 to 1990 and as United States Ambassador to Hungary from 1994 to 1997.[1][3][9]

In 2015, the Open Society Archives in Hungary was renamed the Vera and Donald Blinken Open Society Archives after receiving a major donation from the couple.[14]

Personal life

Blinken lived in the River House[15][16] and in East Hampton, New York.[17]

His son, Antony Blinken, is the United States Secretary of State in the presidency of Joe Biden.[18][19]

Blinken died in East Hampton on September 22, 2022, at the age of 96.[20]
