A microcontroller is a small computer on a single integrated circuit consisting of a CPU combined with peripheral support functions such as a crystal oscillator, timers, watchdog timer, serial and analog I/O etc. Program memory is also often included on chip, as well as limited RAM. Designed for small or dedicated applications, microcontrollers differ from the microprocessors used in personal computers and other general purpose applications, in that simplicity is emphasized.
