Brian Mayes (politician)
Brian Mayes is a Winnipeg city councillor for the St. Vital ward.[1] He was elected to the position on November 26, 2011, winning by 3,623 votes, following the resignation of Gord Steeves.[2] Mayes grew up in St. Vital and graduated from Dakota Collegiate before earning a bachelor's in public administration from Carlton University, and a master's degree in industrial relations and a law degree from the University of Toronto.[3] A former school trustee, he currently resides in the St. Vital Ward with his wife, Dr. Alison Marshall a Professor at Brandon University, and author of The Way of the Bachelor: Early Chinese Settlement in Manitoba (2011),[4] and Cultivating Connections: The Making of Chinese Prairie Canada (2014) both with UBC Press.[5]
In January 2013, Councillor Brian Mayes was appointed to the executive policy committee.[6] During Mayes’s term of office, he has supported the construction of a new duck pond pavilion at St. Vital park,[7] over 2 million dollars in scheduled renovations for the St. Vital library,[8] and a 3 million dollar plus upgrade to the outdoor St. Vital Centennial pool.[9]
Mayes was re-elected as St. Vital City Councillor on October 22, 2014.[10] He was re-appointed to the Executive Policy Committee in November, 2014 by Mayor Brian Bowman.[11] Mayes is Chair of City Council's Standing Committee on Downtown Development, Heritage and Riverbank Management.[12]
