The Australian cricket team toured New Zealand in the 1973-74 season to play a three-match Test series against New Zealand.

The series was drawn 1-1. It was the first time New Zealand beat Australia in a test match, and the first time they won a test match since 1969.[1]

Australian squad

Australia had just defeated New Zealand 2-0 in a series at home.

Paul Sheahan was unavailable for selection. The original squad selected was as follows:

  • 1st Test at Basin Reserve, Wellington - match drawn
  • 2nd Test at Lancaster Park, Christchurch - New Zealand won by 5 wickets
  • 3rd Test at Eden Park, Auckland - Australia won by 297 runs

There was controversy during the 3rd test match when New Zealand batsman Glenn Turner argued on the field with Ian Chappell.[1][2]

  • 1st ODI at Carisbrook, Dunedin - Australia won by 7 wickets
  • 2nd ODI at Lancaster Park, Christchurch - Australia won by 3 runs
