Ardrey Kell High School is a high school in the Ballantyne neighborhood of Charlotte, North Carolina. Part of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, it opened in 2006.[1] The principal is David Switzer.[2] The school was the first high school in Mecklenburg county to have an artificial turf athletic field on-site.Their mascot is the Knight, and their school colors are purple and white.

History

Ardrey Kell was named after two prominent local families in the area known as "Lower Providence" in southern Mecklenburg County.[3] Both families have served the community as farmers, physicians, educators, politicians and church leaders. The school is also located on Ardrey Kell Road.

Athletics

Ardrey Kell won the 2009–2010 Wachovia Conference Cup Championship, alongside Charlotte Catholic. Sponsored by Wachovia, the award recognizes high schools that achieve the best overall athletic performances in their conferences, primarily based on postseason play. The Knights also won the Wachovia Cup for the second straight year in 2010–2011.[4] In the 2012-2013 school year, the women's volleyball team won the North Carolina 4A state championship in Raleigh, North Carolina.[5]

The baseball team won the NC 4A State Championship in 2009. Behind the pitching of Alex Wood, Chris Alvarez, and Brennen Davis. Along with help from Taylor Patterson who hit in 4 home runs in the playoffs. They are the only men's sport team in AK to have a state title. Women's golf won the state title in fall of 2010 and again in 2012. Ardrey Kell also hosts several rising clubs including the Ardrey Kell Speech and Debate Team, the Ardrey Kell DECA Club, and the Ardrey Kell HOSA Club.

Ardrey Kell wrestling team is becoming a North Carolina wrestling powerhouse.

The Ardrey Kell Men's track and field team has won the 4A conference championship 5 times in the last 6 years, falling short in 2013 by only 27 points. The Ardrey Kell Men's Cross Country team is also a rising powerhouse, with the underclassmen becoming some of North Carolina's most prolific runners.

The Ardrey Kell Men's Basketball Team, currently coached by Micheal Craft, went 14-0 in their conference during the 2014-2015 school year, and they were ranked #8 in the state of North Carolina. A notable player, Steven Santa Ana, who will attend Elon University next year, will be the 10th player in Ardrey Kell history to go on to play college basketball.[6]

Clubs and activities

Ardrey Kell features a Marine Corps JROTC unit, which has won many trophies through its drill, rifle, and orienteering teams. Ardrey Kell also has a strong speech and debate team, led by their coach Chris Harrow. Ardrey Kell's Speech and Debate team has won the North Carolina state championships for 5 years in a row. The Ardrey Kell Scholastic Club has also won states two years in a row (2012–13, 2013–14) and placed third in the National Academic Quiz Bowl Championship Cup for four years. In 2012, Kelly Kapur won Best Supporting Actress at the Blumey Awards, put on by the Blumenthal Performing Arts center in Uptown Charlotte, for her role in Oklahoma! as Ado Annie. Ardrey Kell's Oklahoma! was nominated for seven other awards at the Blumeys as well. In 2014, the Blumenthal nominated Ardrey Kell's Seussical the Musical in five categories including Rachel Buksbazen for Best Supporting Actress as Jojo and Mckenzie Wilson for Best Actress as The Cat In The Hat. In 2015, "42nd Street" was nominated for nine Blumey awards, winning Best Musical, Best Overall Direction, Best Ensemble, Best Set Construction, and Best Student Orchestra. The Ultimate Frisbee team is poised to have a great 2015-2016 team led by much improved Junior, Avery Feagans and a great core of incoming freshman.

Ardrey Kell holds an annual talent show in the school auditorium. On May 24th, 2016, a student flipped a water bottle and landed it upright on a table.[7] Videos of this event quickly went viral and gained widespread attention and media coverage. The videos have been displayed on many sports websites.[8]
