Adam Paul Laxalt (born August 31, 1978) is an American attorney and politician. He serves as the 33rd and current Nevada Attorney General. He is a member of the Republican Party. Prior to becoming Attorney General, Laxalt served as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy.

Laxalt ran for Attorney General of Nevada in the 2014 election and defeated Democrat Ross Miller.[1]

Parentage

Laxalt is the son of former U.S. Senator Pete Domenici (R-NM) and Michelle Laxalt, the daughter of former Nevada Governor and Senator Paul Laxalt (R-NV).

During the 1970s, Domenici himself had fathered an illegitimate child with Michelle Laxalt, a 24-year-old Republican staffer and lobbyist, the daughter of Republican Senator Paul Laxalt. The child was not publicly acknowledged by Domenici until 2013.[2] On February 20, 2013, U.S. Senator Pete Domenici (R-NM) acknowledged that Laxalt was his son, as a result of the affair saying,"I deeply regret this and am very sorry for my behavior."[2]

Career as Attorney General

Laxalt was sworn in as the 33rd Attorney General of Nevada on January 5, 2015. His inauguration made him the youngest Attorney General in the United States.[3]

In January 2015, Laxalt joined a majority of other United States Attorneys General in a multi-state effort to combat federal overreach by challenging Obama's effort to change federal immigration law.[4]

In February, he hosted a Nevada Law Enforcement Summit bringing together sheriffs, chiefs and district attorneys from 17 counties around the state.[5] He also announced an Attorney General Advisory Committee for the Office of Military Legal Assistance, which provides free legal assistance to military communities.[6] On February 25, 2015, Attorney General Laxalt testified in front of the House Judiciary Committee regarding the unconstitutionality of President Obama's executive overreach on immigration.[7]

In March 2015, Laxalt joined a bipartisan coalition of 22 other state attorneys general to urge the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms to discard a controversial ammunition proposal that would ban a type of commonly used rifle ammunition. The combined support caused the ATF to later shelf the proposed ban.[8]

In April 2015, Laxalt pursued a case against fraudulent health care providers in Las Vegas for submitting false Medicaid claims for services that were not provided in 2012.[9] On April 20, 2015, he joined three other states in filing the "friend of the court" brief with the goal of getting President Obama and his administration to withdraw 1 million+ acres of public land from the use of uranium mining.[10] General Laxalt made an appearance on the morning show Good Morning America to discuss the role of the Attorney General’s office in consumer protection.[11] In late April 2015, his Public Integrity Unit announced the indictment of a Former Assembly Member for perjury charges.[12] On April 28, 2015, General Laxalt and the Nevada Gaming Control Board filed a complaint against an Internet gaming operator.[13]

In May 2015, Laxalt joined a bipartisan coalition of 20 states to uphold Second Amendment rights.[14] He also announced a $158m settlement with Sprint and Verizon regarding Mobile Cramming.[15] On May 19, 2015, General Laxalt joined a federal-state crackdown on cancer charities who allegedly bilked over $187 million from charitable donors.[16] In late May 2015, he joined 30 other Attorneys General in announcing a major settlement with three national credit reporting agencies.[17]

In June 2015, Laxalt filed a suit challenging federal overreach in a new "Waters of the United States" Rule on behalf of the state of Nevada. The rule would give the federal government power over state and local waters.[18]

In July 2015, Laxalt announced a $136m credit card debt collection settlement with JPMorgan Chase.[19] On July 30, 2015, he announced the first conviction by his office in a sex trafficking case.[20]

In August 2015, Laxalt filed a suit against the Environmental Protection Agency to deter "sue and settle" tactics used to disadvantage the state of Nevada.[21] On August 15, 2015, General Laxalt hosted an Inaugural Basque Fry celebrating the heritage in Nevada with 2016 presidential candidates and other elected officials. Attendees included: Ambassador John Bolton, Dr. Ben Carson, US Senator Ted Cruz, Carly Fiorina, Former Governor George Pataki and Governor Scott Walker, and many others.[22] In late August, he announced a $71m consumer settlement with Amgen Inc. for deceptive labeling on products.[23] He also announced a settlement of over $1.2m with K-12 test distributors.[24] August 25, 2015, General Laxalt announced a "friend of the court’ brief in the U.S. Supreme Court to encourage the courts to protect a religious nonprofit organization from being required to violate religious views or pay federal fines.[25]

In September 2015, Laxalt secured $3.68m to help eliminate the rape kit backlog in the state of Nevada.[26] In late September, he announced the indictment of the American Equity Foundation for lending fraud and racketeering.[27]
