The 2020 Indiana Democratic primary was scheduled to take place on Tuesday, May 5, 2020, but has been delayed to Tuesday, June 2, 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.[1] The Indiana primary is an open primary, with the state awarding 89 delegates, of which 82 are pledged delegates allocated on the basis of the results of the primary.

Procedure

Indiana was the only state voting on May 5, 2020 in the Democratic primaries,[2] but was rescheduled to vote with several other states on June 2, 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.[1]

Voting is expected to take place throughout the state from 6:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. local time. In the open primary, candidates must meet a threshold of 15 percent at the congressional district or statewide level in order to be considered viable. The 70 pledged delegates to the 2020 Democratic National Convention will be allocated proportionally on the basis of the results of the primary. Of the 70 pledged delegates, between 4 and 7 are allocated to each of the state's 9 congressional districts and another 9 are allocated to party leaders and elected officials (PLEO delegates), in addition to 15 at-large pledged delegates. These delegate totals do not account for pledged delegate bonuses or penalties from timing or clustering.[3]

The state convention will subsequently be held on Saturday, June 13, 2020 to designate the district-level national convention delegates and vote on the 15 pledged at-large and 9 PLEO delegates to send to the Democratic National Convention. The 70 pledged delegates Indiana sends to the national convention will be joined by 7 unpledged PLEO delegates (5 members of the Democratic National Committee and 2 members of Congress, both of which are U.S. Representatives).[3]
