Mersin İdmanyurdu (also Mersin İdman Yurdu, Mersin İY, or MİY) Sports Club; located in Mersin, east Mediterranean coast of Turkey in 2000–01. Mersin İdmanyurdu has finished 2000–01 Second League season for the 27th time. This was the last season of Second League as second division in Turkish football league system. Team finished second stage at seventh place in 2000–01 season and placed to newly founded 2001-02 Second League Category B in the next season.

Macit Özcan was club president. Levent Arıkdoğan managed the team at the start of the season. Tarkan Özyılmaz was mostly appeared player with 30 appearances, while he shared the top goalscorer title with Zeynel Abidin Oktay with 13 goals.

2000–01 league participation

Mersin İdmanyurdu took place in Group 1 in 2000–01 Second League season. League was played in three stages. In the first stage 50 teams in five groups (10 clubs in 4 groups and 11 teams in 2nd group) played for first two rankings to play in promotion group. The promotion group consisted of those 10 teams. At the end of the second stage top two teams promoted to 2001-02 First League. Remaining teams in each ranking group played in classification groups, by carrying points and goals from ranking groups. Bottom two teams relegated to 2001-02 Third League at the end of the season. In the third stage, 8 clubs (3 from the promotion group and 1 each from 5 classification groups) played one-leg play-off games in Antalya Atatürk Stadium to determine the third team to be promoted to First League.[2]

Mersin İdmanyurdu took place in Group 1 consisted of 10 teams and finished first stage at 7th place and couldn't took place in promotion group. In classification group, team finished 7th again and could not attend to promotion play-off games. In the next season a new league system was introduced. In the new system a one group second level division is created and named as "Second League Category A" (which would have been named as "League B" starting from 2005–06 season and renamed as "TFF First League" starting from 2010–11 season. The Second League continued as third tier and renamed as "Second League Category B", "League B", and "TFF Second League" accordingly. Promotion Group team who remained after promotions, relegated teams from top division and, top two teams from Classification Groups formed newly founded "Category A". Mersin İdmanyurdu who finished 7th in Classification Group 1 and placed in Category B in the next season, which may mean an automatic relegation.

Classification group league table

Classification Group 1 was played with 8 teams remaining after top two of ranking group were promoted to promotion group. Top team in the group promoted to promotion play-offs, while bottom one team relegated to 2001–02 TFF Third League season. Points and goals were carried from ranking group. MİY obtained 2 wins, 6 draws and 6 losses and finished 7th . Normally, only the last team, Bakırköyspor would have relegated. However, starting from 2001–02, a new system was introduced to second level football league in Turkey. In the new system Second League is divided into two categories: Category A and Category B. Those teams who took place in 2000–01 Second League Promotion Group and top two teams from each classification groups formed Category A. Rest of the teams in Classification Group 1, 3rd through 7, included in Category B. Therefore, MİY relegated to third level league, 2001–02 TFF Second League - Category B after the end of the season. 2000–01 Turkish Cup participation

MİY did not participate in 2000–01 Turkish Cup due to eligibility rules. 39th Turkish Cup (played as "Türkiye Kupası") was played by 64 teams. Top four teams in previous year's classification groups were qualified to the Cup from Round 1. Mersin İdmanyurdu had finished 1999–2000 at 5th place and could not be qualified. Cup was played in 4 rounds prior to quarterfinals. All rounds were played in one-leg elimination system. Gençlerbirliği won the cup for the 2nd time.[8]

Management

Club management

Macit Özcan, mayor of Mersin city was president. Özcan was elected President in club congress after 18 April 1999 local elections. Mayors presided the club many times in its history.

Coaching team

Levent Arıkdoğan was head coach at the start of the season.
