F.C. Internazionale Milano was once again involved in the battle for the Serie A title, coming up just short to Sampdoria, who effectively clinched the title due to a 2-0 win over Inter at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza with a few rounds left. As a consolation Inter won the UEFA Cup following a 2-0 victory at home and a 1-0 defeat in Rome against Roma in an all-Italian contest in the final. The most successful players during the course of the season were German duo Lothar Matthäus and Jürgen Klinsmann, with Matthäus leading the goal scoring charts at the club from the midfield.
