Uri (Urdu;اُوڑی) is a town on the river Jhelum in the Baramulla district, in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. It has been ruled by the Khawaja family for more than a century. The current MLA is a descendant of the Late Nawab, Haji Khawaja Ghulam Rasool Naqshbandi (Zaildar Of Uri).

Demographics

At the 2001 census,[1] Uri had a population of 400,900. Males were 53% of the population and females 47%. Islam was the predominant religion, at 95% of the total population; Hindus, Sikhs and Christians accounted for the rest. Uri has an average literacy rate of 85%, higher than the national average of 76%. Male literacy is 90%, and female literacy is 76%. 40% of the population is under 6 years of age.
