He has the ability that he calls "Return by Death" to go back in time when he dies, with only himself remembering what happened. Emilia (エミリア Emiria?) / Satella
Voiced by: Rie Takahashi
The main female protagonist. She is a silver-haired half-elf girl who is one of the candidates to become the next ruler in the royal election. Subaru first meets her when her insignia is stolen by Felt as she needs to possess it to be eligible to participate in the election. She introduces herself as Satella when she and Subaru met during the first timeline before introducing herself by her real name when she got her insignia back.
Puck (パック Pakku?)
Voiced by: Yumi Uchiyama
Emilia's familiar and a spirit in the form of a cat. Its work time is from 9AM to 5PM, similar to a salaryman's. Has emphatic ability that allows him to read people's minds through their emotions/intent.
Felt (フェルト Feruto?)
Voiced by: Chinatsu Akasaki
A 15 years old thief who grew up in a poor village. She steals Emilia's insignia to sell to the highest bidder.
Old-Man Rom (ロム爺 Romu-ji?)
Voiced by: Mugihito
Felt's longtime caretaker, who is like a grandfather for Felt. He runs a tavern and has storehouse full of stolen goods.
Rem (レム Remu?)
Voiced by: Inori Minase
An ogre and the twin sister of Ram. She still has a full horn, which grants her power. She does the cooking for the mansion, although her ability to cleaning is better than her sister.
Ram (ラム Ramu?)
Voiced by: Rie Murakawa
An ogre and the older twin sister of Rem. She lost her powers after her horn had been cut. She does the cleaning and laundry for the mansion. Ram is attracted to her master, Roswaal.
Beatrice (ベアトリス Beatorisu?)
Voiced by: Satomi Arai
A mysterious mage who was hired by Roswald to keep his ancient magical tomes safe in his enormous library. She has the ability to warp any room in the mansion to this library whenever she chooses, but can't completely leave the mansion. Despite of her cold behavior and verbal abuses to Subaru, Beatrice can't stand if people are hurt in front of her and becomes one of people that Subaru can trust.
Reinhard van Astrea (ラインハルト・ヴァン・アストレア Rainharuto van Asutorea?)
Voiced by: Yūichi Nakamura
An easy going royal knight who holds the title of Sword Saint. He exhibits extraordinary powers in combat.
Elsa Granhiert (エルザ・グランヒルテ Eruza Guranhiru?)
Voiced by: Mamiko Noto
A assassin/mercenary from a northern country called Gusteko who can sense fear in others. She is the first person to kill Subaru and trigger his time rewind ability. She is after Emilia's insignia for reasons yet to be explained. She attempts to buy it from Felt and Rom, but she ends up killing them instead when negotiations fail during the first and second timelines. She is known for killing her 'prey' by cutting open their stomach. In the final timeline of the stolen insignia, she is defeated by Reinhard and retreats vowing to come after Subaru again.
Roswaal L. Mathers (ロズワール・L・メイザース Rozuwāru L Meizāsu?)
Voiced by: Takehito Koyasu
A Margrave as well as an Imperial Wizard and Count who is a benefactor and sponsor for Emilia's bid for the throne. He has an appearance and affect that lead to Subaru initially mistaking him for a clown. He is a highly influential individual who is also one of Lugnica's powerful mages.

Subaru is saved by a fairy girl, who introduces herself as "Satella", and her accompany, Puck; and he decides to return the favor by getting her insignia back that was stolen by Felt. Subaru and "Satella" travel to the loot house Felt lives in only to find out that she was killed, and shortly after entering the house they are killed. Subaru's special ability then activates to rewind time and he finds himself back at the moment he was speaking with the vendor. He decides to head out to the loot house; he meets Felt and Rom, and negotiates with them for the insignia. The person who killed Subaru in the first timeline, Elsa, arrives and the two submit their offers for the insignia. Subaru offers his cell phone whose camera feature is perceived to be more valuable than the money Elsa has and Felt and Rom accepts his offer. However, Elsa kills everybody again when Subaru states his intention to give the insignia back to its original owner. Subaru revives back to the moment he was speaking with the vendor again. He sees "Satella" and greets her, but she questions why he addresses her with the name of the "envy witch".
2 "Reunion with the Witch"
"Saikai no Majo" (再会の魔女)
April 11, 2016 [37][38]
Seemingly irritated by the name of "envy witch", "Satella" leaves. Subaru attempts to prevent the insignia from being stolen, but the plan fails and he gets himself killed by the thugs in the alley while chasing Felt. Having revived back when he spoke with the vendor again, Subaru changes his approach by not meeting "Satella" and instead trying to buy the insignia from Felt before Elsa could negotiate. In the alley, he is saved by Reinhard, and Subaru asks him to tell "Satella" not to come to the loot house. As Subaru heads over to the loot house, he runs into with Elsa who took note about his unusual behavior. Subaru sees Felt and tells her what Rom said to him in the previous timeline about his cell phone. Rom appraises the phone and confirms its value, but Felt refuses to sell him the insignia without first hearing Elsa's offer due to his suspicious behavior. Someone comes knocking at the door and Subaru is worried that it is Elsa, but to his surprise it is "Satella", who he told not to come to the house.
3 "Starting Life from Zero in Another World"
"Zero Kara Hajimaru Isekai Seikatsu" (ゼロから始まる異世界生活)
April 18, 2016 [39][40]
Shortly after "Satella" arrives, Elsa appears and begins attacking. Puck gains the upper hand with his ice magic, but he is forced to go to sleep as he loses his powers at night. Felt is ordered to flee the house, Rom is severely wounded, and "Satella" is getting exhausted while fighting Elsa. Reinhard then arrives and Elsa introduces herself as a bowel hunter. "Satella" heals Rom's wounds while Reinhard keeps Elsa distracted, then Reinhard uses a van Astrea sword technique to defeat Elsa. However, Elsa survived the attack and she slashes Subaru, who had taken the hit intended for "Satella", before retreating. "Satella" heals Subaru's wounds to save his life. At Subaru's request, she reveals her real name Emilia. Felt returns the insignia to Emilia as a gratitude. Reinhard initially intended to let Felt go, but after seeing the insignia glittering in her hand, he changes his mind and takes Felt with him, claiming that he can't overlook her crime of stealing the insignia despite being off-duty. He also warns Emilia that the quiet life will soon come to an end, and that she might be summoned soon.
4 "The Happy Roswaal Mansion Family"
"Rozuwāru-tei no Danran" (ロズワール邸の団欒)
April 25, 2016 [41][42]
Subaru wakes up at Roswaal's mansion and meets Beatrice in the library after wandering in an endless loop in the hallway. Beatrice drains his mana causing him to fall unconscious. He then wakes up again with the maid twins Ram and Rem in the bedroom. He then reunites with Emilia and Puck, and then meets Roswaal, who tells him that Emilia needs the insignia to be qualified as a candidate of the next monarch in the upcoming royal election. As gratitude for getting the insignia back, Subaru asks to work at the mansion as a butler. Working alongside Ram and Rem, Subaru struggles with all of his duties during his first five days on the job leading Roswaal to believe that he is better suited for another role with his carefree attitude. That night, Subaru talks to Emilia about his struggles and efforts on the job, and Emilia agrees to go on a date with him the next day to a village to watch the kids. However, when Subaru wakes up he finds himself back at the time he woke up with Ram and Rem in the room, realizing that he died in his sleep that night.
5 "The Morning of Our Promise is Still Distant"
"Yakusoku Shita Asa wa Tōku" (約束した朝は遠く)
May 2, 2016 [43][44]
Subaru is revived and is reintroduced to Rem and Ram. Subaru in an attempt to figure out how he had died, attempts to recreate the timeline by trying to trigger events that had happened in the previous timeline, which works only partially because of events that he did not experience in the previous timeline, such as being taught to read and write by Ram. During chores, Subaru and Rem's relationship deepens which seems to bother Ram. While out shopping, Rem shows to care about her sister to an abnormal level, being commented by Subaru as "fanatical like a demon" where Rem then asks how Subaru thinks about demons. Afterwards, Emilia teaches Subaru since Rem and Ram are busy, where afterwards Subaru asks Emilia out on a date to a village to play with the kids and see the flower fields. Subaru attempts to stay up all night thinking about his actions in the new timeline, realizing he had fixed and missed certain events from the previous one and falls asleep. Subaru abruptly wakes up in the middle of the night and is violently sick. When he struggles to walk down a hallway, he is viciously attacked by an unseen assailant and killed once again.
6 "The Sound of Chains"
"Kusari no Oto" (鎖の音)
May 9, 2016 [45][46]
Subaru is revived once again. To figure out how he was killed in the previous timelines, he chooses to take the role of a retainer in Roswaal's mansion. In a talk with Beatrice, she proposes two possible causes of his death: curse, which she desprises; draining of mana, which she thinks in this mansion only herself and Puck can do, but she denies that it was her who killed Subaru with this; she also states that it was her that healed him when he first arrived at the mansion. In a talk with Ram, Subaru tells her a folktale in which a blue demon sacrificed his own reputation to help a red demon, his friend, to get well with human. Ram comments that both demons are fool, and the red demon could have give up his own horn for this. She also advises Subaru not to tell the same story to Rem. Subaru also learns from the folktale books the legends about the dragon and the kingdom, and the story of the witch. In the fourth day in this timeline, Subaru decides to leave the mansion, and go to a cliff to observe what would happen in the mansion from outside. In the evening, he was suddenly attacked. After evading the first two impacts, he grabs the weapon of the assailant, forcing her to show herself, who, to his shock, turns out to be Rem.
7 "Natsuki Subaru's Restart"
"Natsuki Subaru no Risutāto" (ナツキ・スバルのリスタート)
May 16, 2016 [47][48]
Rem knocks Subaru down and tortures him. She suspects that Subaru belongs to a faction against Emilia, and states that he has a smell of witch before killing him. Subaru is revived once again in the mansion, and meets Ram and Rem again, with fear. Emilia worries about him, realizing he is in trouble; Subaru tries to tell her about his deaths and revivals, but just as he begins, a black shadow seemingly with hands overwhelms him. Two days later, Beatrice is sent to see what's bothering him; she also states that he has a strong smell of witch. Subaru asks her to guarantee his safety at the fourth night, which she grants by making a contract with him. On that night, he recalls Rem's attack on him, and feels his hands held by other hands, and then wakes up in Beatrice's room. He gets through the night in this room safely. In the next morning, he walks out of the room, and finds that Rem is dead, leaving Ram in grief. Roswaal states that she died of exhaustion, possibly caused by a curse. He and Emilia ask for clues for Rem's loss, which Subaru is unable to provide. Ram suspects Subaru and tries to attack him, but Beatrice protects him because of the contract. Subaru runs away from the mansion and goes to a cliff. Beatrice approaches him and informs him that the maid twin is incomplete with the loss of one, and offers to help him to escape the territory. Subaru realizes that it was the twin that held his hands in his sleep. Then Ram also arrives, swearing to kill Subaru. Believing that his own cowardice has led to Rem's tragedy, and despite Beatrice's protection, Subaru jumps off the cliff to his death announcing that he will definitely rescue everybody.
8 "I Cried, Cried My Lungs Out, and Stopped Crying"
"Naite Naki Wameite Naki Yandakara" (泣いて泣き喚いて泣き止んだから)
May 23, 2016 [49][50]
Subaru is revived again; realizing that his trust level with the maid twins is important, he asks to work at the mansion as a butler again. While taking a break from work, Subaru asks Puck to teach him how to use magic to defeat the shaman working behind the scenes. Puck analyzes Subaru's mana to determine his attribute and finds out that his is shadow. During his training, Subaru struggles to utilize magic. Continuing with his work, he overexerts himself in performing his job to gain the trust of the twin maids and falls asleep lying on Emilia's lap and crying. That night, Subaru wakes up and asks Beatrice about detecting curses, learning that curses must be activated through physical contact, and through that piece of information he deduces that the curse came from the village. The next day, Subaru returns to work and agrees to go to the village with both of the twins.
9 "The Meaning of Courage"
"Yūki no Imi" (勇気の意味)
May 30, 2016 [51][52]
Subaru visits the village with Ram and Rem with the purpose of finding the the culprit. When the three return from the village, Roswaal leaves for the night, which did not happen in the previous timelines. Subaru sees Beatrice to confirm that he was cursed and to locate the area it was applied to on his body. Having traced the curse to the dog that bit him, Subaru realizes that the children are in danger and that night, he returns to the village with Rem. The children go missing and the two venture into the forest to find all but one of the missing children, who have been bitten by the dog. While Rem heals the children, Subaru goes searching for the last child and gets attacked by a Mabeast. Subaru defeats the Mabeast, but he gets surrounded by a pack of Mabeasts and Rem arrives to clear a path. The two run back to the village, but while buying time to get the children to safety, Rem gets overwhelmed and unleashes the demon within her. With Rem about to be killed, Subaru stands in to take the attack.
