Kalengada Bhemaiah Chinapa, better known as Nikhil Chinapa and VJ Nikhil, (born in Bangalore, India on 6 June 1973) is an Indian radio jockey and video jockey and is a popular presenter on MTV India. He was the Festival Director of Asia's premier music festival Sunburn Festival in Goa before parting with Percept INC in fall 2013.[1]

Personal life and background

Nikhil Chinapa was born in Bangalore and has lived in Agra, where he studied in St. George's College, Agra. His father, an Indian Army Paratrooper, was then transferred to Secunderabad where he studied in Faust and for a few months in Begumpet's Hyderabad Public School. He then went on to study at St. Joseph's Boys' High School, Bangalore.

Chinapa is married to DJ Pearl.[2]

Role in The Indian Dance Music Scene

At India's Got Talent Show

Today, Chinapa and his company called Submerge Music are known for having been instrumental in bringing the most prominent DJs to India such as the likes of Above & Beyond, Swedish House Mafia, Alesso, Deniz Koyu, Armin Van Buuren, Zedd, Hardwell and Tiesto.

He has a massive fan following among EDM (Electronic Dance Music) enthusiasts on Twitter and is credited by and large to be a pioneer for EDM in India.

His firm Submerge promotes upcoming DJs and events at clubs in the metro cities of Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore. His name is now synonymous for contemporary dance and music events across India. He started Submerge to promote the image of a DJ as an artist rather than adhering to the popular demand of the audience at clubs.[3]

He is also known to host a popular weekly radio show called 'Together' commonly known as TGTR on Sunday nights on www.tgtr.in featuring both new and commercial tracks along with guest mixes.

He hosts a TV show called MTV roadies, a youth-based popular reality television show on MTV India.[4] The hosts interview contestants and these interviews are designed to bring out the true nature of the participants. These interviews often have abusive language, e.g. in one interview Chinapa asks about animals living in Africa and when the contestant mentions vultures, Chinapa starts to insult the contestant saying that vultures are not animals and that the contestant is stupid, that the contestant should be ashamed of herself for suggesting that vultures are animals, and he even says that she exhibits "the most remarkable level of stupidity" he has ever seen (of course, vultures are indeed animals, and Chinapa was wrong for suggesting that they are not animals).[5]

Other Activities

In September, 2014, Nikhil Chinapa in collaboration with Indian online fashion brand Koovs.com launched an exclusive new clothing line for men.[6][7]
