Henri Anier (born 17 December 1990) is an Estonian professional footballer who plays as a striker for Scottish Premiership club Dundee United and the Estonia national football team.

Club career

Flora

Anier started his career in Flora Football Academy. In 2007 he was loaned to Esiliiga club Warrior. He rejoined Flora in 2008.[2] During his first season with Flora, Anier scored 15 goals in 28 appearances. After the season, Anier went on trials to clubs around Europe like Hannover 96,[3] Palermo[4] and Ascoli.[5]

In 2009, Anier then moved to Italian side Sampdoria, on loan for the reminder of the season, with an options to signed a deal permanent.[6] After leaving Sampdoria, Anier wrote on the Õhtuleht Online columns and says his time at the club helped him developed well in Italian football.[7] But he returned to the club for the 2010 season, where it was his breakthrough season for Anier where he scored thirteen goals, including his hat-trick of the season, in a 5–0 win over against Lootus and he would also helped the club win the title.[8]

The 2011 season was more successful for Flora as the club defended their Meistriliiga title. Anier was Flora's top goalscorer in the season with 21 goals and 4th best in the league. Anier would improve himself, by scoring four goals in a 13–1 thrashing win over against bottom side Ajax.[9] Anier scored another hat-trick, on 27 September 2011, as the club win 6–0 against Sillamäe Kalev.[10] Also, in the Estonian Cup, Anier scored three hat-tricks in the cup against Jalgpallihaigla, in a 17–0 win in the first round;[11] another against Lelle, in a 13–0 win in the second and scored four times, in a 9–0 win over Lootos in the last-16.[12]

Viking

On 20 December 2011, he signed a three-year deal with Tippeligaen side Viking FK.[13][14] He made his debut on the opening day of the 2012 season, scoring his first goal in the away game against Sandnes Ulf, which resulted a 2–2 draw.[15] However, his time there was "very poor", as his first team opportunities soon became limited and his scoring form had become poor with one goal.

After featuring on the bench twice for the 2013 season, Anier joined Fredrikstad on loan, which the club will keep him until 15 July 2013.[16] Anier scored his first goal, in a 2–1 loss against Sandefjord two weeks later after making his debut.[17] Then, on 16 May 2013, Anier scored twice, in a 4–0 win over Stabæk after scoring twice in three minutes.[18] In his four-month loan spell, Anier scored three times in 13 appearances.

Motherwell

On 29 July 2013, after failing to secure a regular first-team spot, Anier joined Scottish Premiership club Motherwell on a six-month loan, after being recommended by his Estonian team-mate Henrik Ojamaa, who left the club, the previous month.[19] Anier scored on his debut, in the opening game of the season, after coming on as a substitute, in a 1–0 win over Hibernian.[20] Then, he scored another in the next game, in a 3–1 loss against Aberdeen.[21]

Erzgebirge Aue

On 10 January 2014, Anier signed for Motherwell on a permanent deal, running until Summer 2016.[22] At the end of the season, Anier was sold to German 2. Bundesliga club Erzgebirge Aue for an undisclosed transfer fee.[23]

Dundee United

Anier returned to the Scottish Premiership by signing for Dundee United.[24] He scored his first goal for the club on 14 February 2015 in a 3–2 away loss against Kilmarnock.

On 1 September 2015, Anier moved on loan to Hibernian, initially for the remainder of the 2015–16 season,[25] however he was recalled to Tannadice in January 2016 after making just three substitute appearances for Hibernian.[26]

International career

Anier has been a virtual ever-present for Estonia's youth national teams. In May 2011 he was chosen as one of the 19-man squad to face Basque Country.[27] On 25 May 2011 he debuted for Estonia when he came on as a substitute in the second half of this non-FIFA match.[28] He started matches against Chile[29] on 19 June 2011 and Uruguay on 23 June 2011,[30] winning his first official caps for his country. He scored his first goal for Estonia on 8 November 2012 in an international friendly game against Oman, coming on in the 64th minute of the game and producing a goal from Taavi Rähn's headed pass in the 85th minute.[31][32]

Personal life

His younger brother Hannes is also a footballer.

Anier attended Tallinn Secondary Science School in 1998 and attended the school until he was nine. While at Primary school, Anier was the key player and captain for the school's football team. In 2007, Anier studied at Tallinn German Gymnasium in Tallinn.

In 2011, Anier was accepted at Tallinn University to study Physical Education Bachelor's.
