Gheorghe "Ghiţă" Licu (December 1, 1945, Fierbinţi, Ilfov - April 8, 2014) was a Romanian handball player who competed in the 1972 Summer Olympics and in the 1976 Summer Olympics.[1]
In 1972 he won the bronze medal with the Romanian team. He played all six matches and scored six goals. Four years later he won the silver medal as part of the Romanian team. He played all five matches and scored 13 goals.
He played in three World Championships, winning two gold medals and one bronze.
A pivot, he played for Dinamo Bucharest.
With 1054,[2] or, according to other sources, 1336[3] goals scored for the men's national team, he was, as of April 2014, the second most scoring player.
After retiring from active play, he became a coach, training the Romanian club Dinamo (1980-1993) and the German club SC Magdeburg (2006).[4]
He was the father of handball player and trainer Robert Licu.
