Summary
Sunlit tower, Tewkesbury Abbey One of Britain's largest churches, the abbey was founded by Robert Fitz Hamon at the end of the 11th century as a Benedictine monastery. It is built from stone brought by sea and river from Normandy in the 12th century. The tower is the largest surviving Norman tower in existence, measuring 14 sq metres and is 45m tall. At one stage the central tower had a wooden spire, rising a further 39m. This collapsed in Easter 1559, due to neglect and was never replaced.
