Summary
This is a photo of the Scandinavian memorial in honour of those of the Scandinavian volunteer corps who gallantly fought the British Imperial forces at the Battle of Magersfontein near Kimberley. The text is in (old ?) Swedish language and translates like this:
- De kunde icke vika: They could not retreat
- Blott falla kunde de: They could only fall
- Til minne om här stupade skandinaver: In memory of Scandinavians killed here.

- It's actually a paraphrase of the 19th century poem Kung Karl, den unge hjälte (Han kunde icke vika, Blott falla kunde han, "He couldn't yield/retreat, he could but fall"). Diupwijk (talk) 22:20, 25 November 2011 (UTC)
