Personal life

Sulzberger was born in Washington, D.C., the son of Gail Gregg and Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Jr., the grandson of Arthur Ochs "Punch" Sulzberger Sr., the great-grandson of Arthur Hays Sulzberger, and the great-great-grandson of Adolph Ochs.[3] His paternal grandfather was Jewish, and the rest of his family is of Christian background (Episcopalian and Congregationalist).

Career

Providence Journal

Sulzberger worked as an intern for The Providence Journal from 2004 to 2006, working from the paper's office in Wakefield.[6] While there, he revealed that membership of the Narragansett Lions Club was not open to women.[6] Despite threats from the club to withdraw their advertising if the story was run, the Journal published Sulzberger's story.[6] The Narragansett Lions Club began admitting women members a few months later.[6]

Sulzberger worked as a news reporter for The Oregonian newspaper in Portland from 2006 to 2009.[7]

New York Times

In February 2009, Sulzberger began writing for the Times. The newspaper published his first article on March 2, 2009.[8]

He was named an associate editor of The New York Times in August 2015.[9] In October 2016, he was named deputy publisher, putting him in line to succeed his father as publisher.[1][3][10]

On December 14, 2017, it was announced that he would take over as publisher on January 1, 2018. He is the sixth member of the Ochs-Sulzberger family to serve in the role.[11][12]

The 2017 film Kodachrome, directed by Mark Raso, is based upon one of his 2010 articles.[13]

Sulzberger meeting at the White House

Sulzberger met Trump at The White House on July 20. He said in a statement, "I told the president directly that I thought that his language was not just divisive but increasingly dangerous. I warned that this inflammatory language is contributing to a rise in threats against journalists and will lead to violence."[14][15][16]
